Gunman found dead after killing Ohio police chief, 2 nursing home workers

UPDATE as of 11:45 a.m.: Authorities said a gunman has fatally shot the police chief of an OH village and two nursing home employees.

Students who were en route to Kickersville Elementary School, which is near the nursing home, were diverted to Watkins Middle School, according to local reports.

In a press conference on Friday afternoon, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorpe said the suspected shooter was found deceased inside the nursing home along with the two employees, but did not identify the shooter or provide any details on his connection to the center.

"Ohio mourns the loss of Kirkersville Chief Eric Disario, who died in the line of duty".

Disario was responding to a report of a man with a gun, and his last radio communication said he had the man in sight, Thorp said.

Investigators say two nursing home employees were also shot and killed.

An officer was shot while responding to an active shooter at a nursing home in Ohio Friday morning, WCMH reports.

Governor John Kasich has taken to Twitter to pay his condolences, also ordering that flags at the state capitol fly at half-mast.

Kirkersville is a village in central OH with a population of around 500 that is around 24 miles (39 km) east of Columbus.

Neither the condition nor the identities of the two injured and hospitalized victims from the OH nursing home shooting have been released by Licking County law enforcement officials.

Kirkersville Police Chief Eric Disario was shot on a street near the Pine Kirk Care Center.

The scene is about five miles west of Hebron in Licking County.

"They cater to the forgotten members of society - folks that have, in addition to physical health care needs, behavioral health issues", Peter Van Runkle, executive director of the Ohio Health Care Association, a nursing home industry group, told the newspaper. As deputies cleared the building, residents and employees were found barricaded in several places, Thorp said.

Thorp said a weapon has not been recovered yet.

A woman who works about a block away said she heard gunshots followed by screaming and then sirens.

Southwest Licking Schools confirm that Kirkersville Elementary is under lock down. The order goes into effect immediately through sunset on May 16, 2017. Law enforcement officials have not confirmed the officer's death, according to the Advocate.
