Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop, new version of Windows 10

That hint, along with the mention of Continuum and Surface's unique hardware design, suggests that Microsoft is targeting a device that could transform from a phone into a laptop or PC.

The most affordable configuration will retail for $999 and features an Intel Core i5 processor, 4 gigabytes of internal RAM and a 128 GB SSD, but other variants will also be available with stronger Core i7 CPUs and SSD storage up to a single terabyte.

"The Surface Laptop weighs in at just 2.76lbs and 14.47mm at its thickest point, and features a 13.5" Pixelsense touchscreen display with 3.4 million pixels and edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and an Alcantara-covered keyboard. The device will be available starting from $999 and upwards and will start shipping next month. The base model includes 128GB of storage, 4GB of RAM and runs on an Intel Core i5 processor.

Microsoft is touting the Surface Laptop as a device without many trade-offs around specs.

Microsoft unveiled a simpler and stripped-out version of Windows 10 at an event in NY yesterday. This new laptop that has already leaked on the web is expected to compete with Apple's computers. Available for pre-order now, the Surface Laptop is set to hit the market on June 15, while other Windows 10 S devices will come out this summer, Microsoft said.

With an HD display measuring in at 12.5 inches, the Toshiba Altair ME+ was one of the largest Windows 10 S notebooks on display at the Microsoft event this week. Surface Laptop was aimed at college students and evidently meant to set a performance bar for partners, some of which will be coming to market with lower priced computers powered by Windows 10 S to entice students at all grade levels. When system resources are tight, Windows 10 S can suspend or terminate UWP processes.
