On February 21, the U.K. Home Office conveyed to Indian officials that the request was certified by the Secretary of State and sent to the Westminster Magistrates' Court for a District Judge to consider issuing an arrest warrant.

"Nobody who is involved in the case would be spared". But I will wait for the MEA to come out with the report, with the confirmation that he has indeed been arrested.

But the business baron played down the arrest.

The Metropolitan Police's Extradition Unit said in a statement that Mallya was arrested "on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud. He was arrested after attending a central London police station".

The cases were registered against Mallya, Kingfisher Airline, UB Group company United Breweries Holdings Ltd and others. "Extradition hearing in Court started today as expected", he tweeted. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said it was a big success for the Indian government as well as the finance ministry.

A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will soon be travelling to London to initiate formalities of likely extradition of Mallya.

Recently, Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Villa was owned by actor and businessman Sachin Joshi for 73 crores. Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya was wanted by Indian security agencies for a long time now.

India and Britain have a mixed record on extradition, say legal experts. On Jan. 28 he said that "not one rupee was misused".

The businessman was forced to quit as a member of India's parliament previous year after an upper house ethics committee recommended his expulsion.

Last April his diplomatic passport was revoked when a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Mallya, who now lives in a sprawling $15 million mansion in England's county of Hertfordshire, has denied absconding and has criticised the media for what he has called a "witch hunt".
