The World Health Organization (WHO) say they now recognize burnout in its guide as a legitimate medical diagnosis.
Video Games Chronicle reports that gaming disorder will now be included in the International Classification of Diseases, which is used internationally by healthcare professionals and insurers.
The worldwide body reached the decision to categorize burnout as a medical condition during its recently concluded World Health Assembly in Geneva. "The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning".
Then, it was described as a "disorder due to addictive behaviour", and now that definition has been recognised by the WHO. United Nations member states, of which Japan is one, are now responsible for putting ICD-11 into practice at a national level, a lengthy process that has been given a target deadline of January 1, 2022.
In response to the classification, representatives of the global video game industry - from the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, South Africa and Brazil - have requested that the World Health Organization changes its decision. Basically, if you're not eating, bathing, taking a walk outside or talking to people, essentially creating a lifestyle that is actively harmful to your individual wellbeing because you're so driven to level up in Destiny, then that's a problem.
Severe storms possible Monday night
Well we may have 3 days (Wednesday-Friday) to do so otherwise a chance of storms exist the other 5 days in the extended forecast . A few storms will pop up around the noon hour with late thunderstorms on the radar after dark, into 2am Wednesday.
Being hooked on gaming is now officially a disorder.
One reason for that, the Heinemanns argue, is that much of the research on burnout focused on "causes and associated factors", rather than on attempts to develop specific diagnostic criteria.
The WHO says burnout can only be diagnosed in relation to work not other life situations.
The committee will hold a press event Wednesday at the National Assembly to outline its protest against the World Health Organization decision and introduce new measures to ameliorate the prejudice sometimes associated with gaming.
More importantly, those with gaming disorder give increasing priority to video games 'over other life interests and daily activities, as well as a 'continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurence of negative consequences'.
