News Anchor Nancy Parker Killed in Plane Crash, Tributes Pour In

An award-winning news anchor died in a stunt plane crash Friday in New Orleans along with her pilot while she was reporting a story on him.

The veteran journalist was working on a feature story for WVUE Fox 8 about stunt pilot and flight instructor Franklin J.P. Augustus when the plane he was flying them in crashed in an empty field. She was a fixture on New Orleans television for more than 20 years.

The station wrote on Facebook the 53-year-old was covering a story at the airport when she died.

New Orleans authorities say a small plane has crashed in the city, killing two people. I was so proud of her; first as an awesome mother of our three children, just incredible. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them", he added.

Before New Orleans, Parker was seen on TV in Baton Rouge at WAFB Channel 9 where she built lasting friendships - journalists at most of Baton Rouge's media: TV, radio and newspaper outlets. "She will be so greatly missed", the post continued. That model aircraft is a biplane.

According to Collin Arnold, Director of the New Orleans Office of homeland Security, a small aircraft crashed, and there was a post-crash fire.

"It looks like the plane is completely charred", said Gerald Herbert, an Associated Press photographer who also is a pilot and has a hangar at Lakefront Airport. He went to the site and described charred debris lying near a fence in a grassy field. The city said on its "Nola Ready" website that firefighters, emergency medical services and the police responded to the fatal crash Friday afternoon.

He did not release the victims' identities and could not confirm the type of plane involved, or whether there were reports of engine failure.

A fire broke out after the plane went down, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, WVUE reported, and the Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation into the crash.
