The New York Times and the Washington Post reported that Trump's team is "scouring" the personal and professional backgrounds of investigators working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller in an effort to thwart his expanding probe into alleged links between Russian Federation and the President's business empire. It "remains to be seen" whether they are prejudiced against Trump, she said.
Citing unnamed sources familiar with White House deliberations, the newspaper said that Trump's lawyers have likewise discussed pardon issues and researched ways to discredit the Justice Department investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Late Thursday, a Washington Post article reported that Trump was consulting with advisers "about his power to pardon aides, family members and even himself" in connection to the Russian Federation probe. The adviser said: "This is not in the context of, 'I can't wait to pardon myself'".
"The president maintains pardon powers, like any president would".
A member of Trump's outside legal team, Jay Sekulow, said the lawyers "will consistently evaluate the issue of conflicts and raise them in the appropriate venue", even complaining to Mueller directly if needed. That new team has been pushing back against Mueller's investigation and is reportedly looking into the backgrounds of investigators in an effort to pinpoint conflicts of interest so can they can discredit his investigation.
