There was "no context included" with the list of names of members of Congress that was found on Hodgkinson, said Federal Bureau of Investigation officials who declined to say what names were on the list or what political party affiliations.

Watson said he learned of Hodgkinson's connection to the Virginia shooting shortly after 9:30 a.m., when he arrived at the department for a meeting.

Yet Slater acknowledged that there was much more they didn't know about the former owner of a home inspection business. There was "no context included", though, and Slater would not characterize it as a "hit list" or as individuals being targeted, nor would Slater identify the members on the list in any way. Brooks and Duncan were at the baseball practice that morning; Franks was not. A sketch of several Washington-area streets also found on the dead gunman was "not deemed to be of investigative significance", Slater said.

"In April 2017, the shooter rented a storage unit in Alexandria", Slater said, "in which we found a laptop computer, an excess of 20o rounds of ammunition, a receipt for a November, 2016 gun purchase, and additional SKS rifle components". Bernie Sanders, whose campaign he had worked on as a volunteer, and was in email contact with the two Democratic senators from his home state. In addition, Hodgkinson visited the office of Sen. Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth.

GJELTEN: Agent Slater said it appears Hodgkinson's decision to shoot up a Republican baseball practice was more spontaneous than planned. At times, he went to the unit daily and sometimes more than once.

"Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?"

Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March and drove to the Alexandria area, where he then lived in his auto at a YMCA across the street from the baseball field.

The gunman who attacked congressional Republicans at a baseball field in Alexandria had in his possession a list naming six Republican congressmen including Rep. Morgan Griffith. There's no indication of the significance of the list, Slater said, declining to specify the lawmakers' party affiliations or names.
