"When I heard my name called, it was like God calling me", Fultz said after being selected. "And I'm just looking forward to going in there and giving it my all and hopefully changing the program around".

Fultz, often compared to Houston's James Harden, missed Washington's final four games, capped by a Pac-12 Tournament loss to Southern California. "They've been with me my entire life, before I was going to be in the National Basketball Association, and they've helped me and been with me the entire way", Tatum said. "I just realized that I was doing stuff that other kids weren't doing and it just started to work out for me".

The Celtics had acquired the pick from the Brooklyn Nets in July 2013.

In a piece on The Players' Tribune, Fultz introduced himself to the city of Philadelphia and described what he experienced over the past few months.

While Markelle Fultz was long expected to go No. 1 overall to the Boston Celtics, he ended up getting traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The NCAA has never really liked it, and earlier this month, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the system as it's now constructed - where players can enter the draft after a year of college - is "not working for anyone". "I didn't know (who) I was working out for". Those are lottery pick tools, but he wound up being selected with the 47th pick in the draft.

The Los Angeles Lakers used the second pick to select homegrown guard Lonzo Ball of UCLA, who led college basketball in assists.

Ball was projected to be picked by the Lakers' new front office of Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka.

Ball's father, LaVar, put on his Lakers hat even before the pick became official.

The Boston Celtics have made it clear over the past two days that as much as they value Jayson Tatum's skill set, length and versatility, their decision to draft the Duke product also factored in his high character.

Heron, who was a 5-star signee in the class of 2016, chose to stay at Auburn this upcoming season after a solid freshman campaign in which he averaged 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds.

It's the fourth time in franchise history that the team has had the overall No. 1 pick.

Kansas' Josh Jackson (Phoenix Suns) and Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox (Sacramento Kings) rounded out the top five.

Butler now joins his former coach, Tom Thibodeau and a young nucleus that includes former No. 1 picks Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, making the Timberwolves a more-than-credible playoff threat next season.

The New York Knicks with the No. 8 pick overall took Frank Ntilikina breaking the run of freshmen drafted.

The league at one point wanted to raise the age from 19 to 20, and the players' union wanted to lower the age limit to 18, creating an environment where high school seniors are eligible for the draft.

Along with Fultz, the Sixers also drafted four other players in the draft, three of which came in the second round.
