Leading centrist figures within the Labour party - including Stephen Doughty, Chuka Umunna, and 49 others - have signed a letter sent to The Guardian headlined: "As Labour politicians, we reject a hard-right Brexit, and defend the single market".

Polling expert John Curtice, a professor at Strathclyde University, said today that the party was boosted by a swing to Labour from professional and managerial level voters, far from the party's historical backers.

He said Labour was no longer a party of the working class, but of "social liberals".

The verdict followed an Ipsos Mori survey which showed Labour achieved its best score among ABC1s since 1979 - increasing its vote share among the group by 12 points on 2015. The swing to Labour is attributed to under 44s, mainly 25-34s, while there was a swing to the Conservatives among over 55s.

This contrasts with graduates, where Labour lead by 15%.
