Former President Barack Obama stepped back into the political arena Thursday to call on supporters to stop the Republican health care bill from becoming law. "I would prefer to address health care reform in a bipartisan manner, but Democrats are unwilling to work with President Trump and congressional Republicans to fix the mess they created".
"Because Obamacare is a direct attack on the middle class, and American families deserve better than its failing status quo".
Like the U.S. House's health-care proposal, the Senate plan proposes cutting federal spending on Medicaid.
Republicans hold 52 out of 100 seats in the Senate and the latest bill is created to thread the needle to find an agreement between the party's conservative and more moderate wings. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the plan, which he calls a discussion draft, will stabilize insurance markets and cut costs to consumers.
The Senate version of the bill proposes heavy cuts to Medicaid funding, gives states the right to weaken protections for pre-existing conditions, temporarily cuts funding to Planned Parenthood, and repeals taxes on wealthier Americans that were used to fund numerous Affordable Care Act's provisions. Trump repeatedly promised that he wouldn't cut Medicaid, and that his plan would provide coverage for all, with cheaper and better policies than Americans can get now.
Another measure of the law will be to allow insurers to raise costs for people, as they get older, granting permits in some states to cover fewer services. The last thing I want to do is play armchair quarterback with them.
It would phase out Obamacare's expansion of the Medicaid program for the poor and disabled over three years, from 2021 to 2024, and then enact deeper cuts in the program than the House version, beginning in 2025.
Pistons take Duke's Kennard with No. 12 pick
You could picture the Duke guard running the floor and filling it up from 3-point range on passes from Russell Westbrook. Kennard is a smart offensive player with a quick release and the ability to flourish in the pick-and-roll.
"It may take me one day; it might take me a week", Rubio said.
SEN. JOHN CORNYN, R-Texas: They can read the bill.
"Obamacare is dead, and we're putting a plan out today that is going to be negotiated".
LISA DESJARDINS: Those negotiations started instantly.
Earlier on Thursday, US Senate Republicans introduced a healthcare measure that aims to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare.
"There are families - middle-income families in SC - that in 18 months will get a call from their nursing home (saying): 'You're got to come get granny because we have no more Medicaid money, and we're not keeping her, ' " said Lynn Bailey, a Columbia-based health-care economist.
