Alabama warns of floating fire ants in floods

"We can not stress enough the importance of avoiding high water", Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards warned Wednesday ahead of Cindy's arrival.

The city and surrounding area remain under tornado warning.

The system is expected to exit the state toward the Tennessee Valley on Friday afternoon as a cold front pushes into Arkansas from the Great Plains. That should limit flooding threats to nuisance street flooding.

Tropical Storm Cindy has made landfall in Louisiana with maximum sustained winds near 40 miles per hour.

In Gulfport, Mississippi, Kathleen Bertucci said heavy rainfall Wednesday sent about 10 inches of water into her business, Top Shop, which sells and installs granite countertops.

Some parts of MS have reported up to eight and a half inches of rain since Cindy's arrival, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbot has raised the readiness level of Texas' State Operations Center in response to the onslaught of heavy rain and high winds. Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy said there were no injuries but fences, trees and power lines were damaged.
