Scalise has gone through at least one operation after he was shot Wednesday during a congressional baseball practice. Officials at the hospital said the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, causing severe bleeding and injuring internal organs.
Sava says infection remains a risk, after doctors performed several surgeries to stop bleeding and begin repairing abdominal and bone damage.
Scalise remained listed in critical condition Thursday night after multiple surgeries, though word came from the hospital during the game that he had improved. Medstar Washington Hospital Center said the congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and that he is more responsive and speaking with family.For three months, Hodgkinson lived out of a white cargo van in a gentrified neighborhood just miles from where US laws are made.
Though Scalise was conscious at the scene after he was shot and his office said he talked to his wife before his first surgery, he was in shock by the time he arrived at the hospital, according to Sava.
Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don't plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said. Now, Sava said he feels "a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic" about the outcome of Scalise's treatment.
But Scalise can hope to make an "excellent recovery", his trauma surgeon said Friday.
Nonetheless, said Sava, "we fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run". Authorities were investigating Hodgkinson's social media posts, a cellphone, computer and camera.

Scalise was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia.
"He's in some trouble", said President Donald Trump, who had visited late Wednesday.
The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said. Lewis led a House floor Democratic sit-in a year ago when Republicans refused to consider gun control legislation.
In a statement Saturday, Matt Mika's family says he will remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.
