Pacers, Lakers involved in trade talks for Paul George

The Lakers are expected to draft UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball Thursday night, assuming they don't trade the No.2 pick.

The Indiana Pacers are looking to move star forward Paul George prior to Thursday's National Basketball Association draft, and have been immersed in trade talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Amico Hoops late Sunday. The Lakers may have cap space and this year's second overall pick, but they also don't own a draft pick in 2018, and it's hard to build a proper supporting cast through free agency.

Keep in mind, the Pacers don't want to be left empty-handed if the 27-year-old gets the opportunity to walk away in free agency in the summer of 2018.

Had he been voted in, George would have qualified for a super-max contract worth about $210 million over five years, a staggering sum that may have been too much to turn down.

During the 2016-17 campaign, when bidding teams would have won George's services for a year and a half, Pacers president Larry Bird received multiple significant offers for the four-time All-Star. "They'll be at the bargaining table because they're always at the bargaining table, but much like the Lakers, they needn't bend over backward to accommodate the Pacers' asking price". If they wait they will run the risk of losing him to a team like the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets or the Cavs if said teams can win a championship with him.

The Lakers have some leverage here - George has expressed his desire to join them when his current deal expires after next season.

The Pacers and Lakers are engaged in trade talks surrounding George, according to an ESPN report.

What if George is traded to a different team in the coming days, enjoys his time with that franchise and then spurns the Lakers and re-signs with his new team? He's now making a serious bid in bringing him on board this summer with a multi-million contract extension in the offing. He averaged 23.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last season and has returned to form following the gruesome leg injury he sustained in 2014 playing with Team USA.

The report has unsurprisingly started some major trade talks as teams are eager to steal George from IN before the Pacers lose him for nothing IN 2018.

The Celtics have the assets to swing a trade with the Pacers and George would be a great fit In Brad Stephens' system.
