Members of the East River Amateur Radio Club from Bluefield will be participating in the National Amateur Radio Field Day exercise at the Boy Scouts of America Camp Roland in Bastian, Va.

Smith and his fellow ham radio operators will begin broadcasting at 1 p.m. Saturday for the National Association for Amateur Radio near the Claremore Elks Lodge, 1820 Summit Drive in north Claremore. The Field Day program is open to the public and free to attend.

Experienced amateur (or "ham") radio operators will be set up at both locations to explain what the world of amateur radio is about. "There are situations, particularly emergency situations, when cell towers might go down or communications on more traditional lines might be interrupted or unavailable, and it's during those times especially when amateur radio operators are there to relay crucial information - to law officers, to hospitals, to firemen and other emergency personnel who might not receive it (information) otherwise".

Anyone interested in learning about amateur radio operation in the tri-county area will have the opportunity this weekend, when the annual "Amateur Radio Field Day" is observed in both Mason and Gallia counties.
