MedStar said in a statement Friday that Scalise was in critical condition but had showed signs of improvement.

Scalise's condition was upgraded to "serious", from "critical" after undergoing another surgery on Saturday, according to a statement from Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Scalise, the House majority whip, was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise "sustained a single rifle wound that entered in the area of the left hip", Sava said, adding that the round fragmented and did "substantial damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels".

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting.

Scalise was sedated Friday, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police Wednesday after firing dozens of bullets during the congressional practice session.

"Scalise continues to show signs of improvement".

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot multiple times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said today.

The statement noted that there would be no further updates on Scalise's condition for the rest of the weekend.
