Sava said Scalise will require surgeries soon for abdominal and bone injuries, in addition to the two he has undergone to fix a bone in his leg broken by the bullet.
Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.
MedStar trauma director Jack Sava says Scalise sustained damage to his bones, internal organs and blood vessels. But Democrats and Republicans recognized that what happened to Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the third-ranking member in the House, could happen to anyone in public life.
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more risky than leaving them in place, Sava said. His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said.
The shooter responsible for opening fire on the baseball field on Wednesday was identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois.

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.

With President Trump's instructions, Vice President Mike Pence has hired Richard Cullen, his own lawyer to represent the U.S. Comey told senators on 8 June that Trump's shifting explanations for dismissing him were "lies, plain and simple".
His comments came after he and First Lady Melania Trump visited a sedated Scalise and his family at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. "And because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified - so important".
After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk "and hopefully run", Sava said.
A congressional aide, a lobbyist and one police officer were also shot before police killed the gunman. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.
Trump added, "We pray for all of the victims of this awful crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many". Scalise will undergo more operations.
Scalise was an enthusiastic participant in the ballgame - in 2015 he posted pictures from the many times he played in the competition against the Democrats' team.
Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference. What's more, Special Agent David Bailey, who was injured in the attack during the Republicans' practice in Virginia on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch to a warm welcome.
