Sekulow admitted not knowing whether Trump was under investigation, saying he had not heard about an investigation and said it was unfair for him to be questioned about speculation.

But Sekulow said repeatedly Sunday that "the president has not been and is not under investigation". The statement comes even though Trump himself has suggested that he is. He maintained that the president's actions won't prevent any of the investigations from proceeding, and that getting to the bottom of what happened would benefit all involved, including President Trump.

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post", he said, referring to the Post's report this week that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the election, now also includes a look at whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

Trump's tweets following the report appeared to confirm the investigation, but his lawyer said it only appeared that way because of the character limit on Twitter.

There is also no rule barring such donations, said David Alan Sklansky, a criminal procedure professor at Stanford University. If the dominos continue to fall, one of five assistant attorneys general or the solicitor general would assume the role.

On Friday, a bewildering tweet by President Donald Trump seemed to confirm he was being investigated in some manner. "We've had no indication of that", said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice. "The President's response was as it related to the Washington Post report. Witch Hunt." The message apparently referred to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated.

"Let me be very clear here... the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

The president has publicly lamented the Russian Federation probe in recent tweets, calling it a "witch hunt" in various tweets.

Trump advisers describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.
