Stan Wawrinka told Rafael Nadal "you were too good" after the Spaniard stormed to a record 10th French Open title on Sunday.
The results: Finals: Men: 4-Rafael Nadal bt 3-Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
Nadal forced Wawrinka into another forehand error to break for 2-0 in the second set before the Swiss halted a run of seven games lost with a hold for 1-3.
First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage.
Now Nadal has 15 Majors in all and went past Pete Sampras with whom he was tied for the second spot with 14 Majors. It was his 18th crown.
"Wawrinka is a very unsafe opponent, so my mentality was that I can not give him the chance to be back on the match", he added.
Nadal entered Sunday's match as the fourth seed and the favorite.
He's already leading the Race To London, having won four events to date, and his form at the French Open suggests that Nadal is back to his very best.
"I didn't play my best tennis", said Wawrinka at the conference. "It's the most important event in my career without a doubt". "That's for sure. But I will need few days to really see that, because it's tough to describe the feeling of losing a Grand Slam final". In just three sets, Nadal played his way into history, becoming the only person to win 10 titles at the same venue in the Open era.
Nadal lost just 35 games across the fortnight as he swept to the title in familiar style, and concede just one solitary break point to Wawrinka in the final, which he duly defended.
