Kunitz, Fleury left unprotected in National Hockey League expansion draft

Leading the Golden Knights' draft is general manager George McPhee, who spent 17 seasons in charge of the Washington Capitals, helping that club rise to prominence. The groundwork is done.

If the Knights sign an unprotected RFA or UFA after the protected lists come out, that would count as a team's expansion player and they would not lose another in the draft.

Players with two years or less of professional experience are automatically exempt from the draft, meaning that the Blues did not have to protect forwards Ivan Barbashev, Robby Fabbri and Zach Sanford and defensemen Colton Parayko and Jordan Schmaltz.

On the other hand, any player with a no-movement clause must be protected. Only seven forwards, three defenseman and a goaltender (or eight skaters of any position and a goaltender) can be protected.

When will we know the lists?

Said Chayka: "I think the league will kind of wait and see how the exposure lists comes out. then hopefully re-engage and see if we can make a deal that makes our team better".

Who do the Canes protect?

The Golden Knights are owned by Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, a consortium led by Bill Foley, the team will be a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference starting in the 2017-18 season.

"There's a lot of unprotected goalies out there", Chayka said.

Johnson, McIlroy, Day all miss cut; 4-way tie at top
He set the target early under warm sunshine, and even as the wind tapered in the afternoon, no one could catch him. McIlroy , sidelined for a month with rib and back injuries, could not shake off the rust missing the U.S.

Defenseman Klas Dahlbeck, who was signed to a one-year, $850,000 contract after the season, could be the D-man exposed.

What happens to Ward and Lack?

Only in this case, he had his pick of the presents, which ended up including big-ticket items like James Neal, Eric Staal, Sami Vatanen, Marc-Andre Fleury, Tomas Plekanec, Josh Manson, Matt Dumba, Bobby Ryan and Petr Mrazek.

"We can put a competitive team on the ice and accumulate draft picks", McPhee said, via the Knights Twitter account. He did it to help the Jets keep some young forwards, while stating that he doesn't want to leave. Nothing can be certain until the official roster is selected at the expansion draft on Wednesday.

"Is it the worst thing to be picked by Vegas and go to an expansion team?" Teams could also ask Vegas to pick an exposed player they're interested in, then get the Knights to subsequently flip him.

The Canes have 10 picks in the Entry Draft, so losing one to resolve the goalie situation would not be a huge hit. The Wild have too many defensemen, so Jonas Brodins name has been bandied about in trade rumors, and the Ottawa Senators will have to do something because defenseman Dion Phaneuf said he wont waive his no-movement clause.

If Vegas decides to select a different Florida player, there are multiple options available.

The lists were submitted Saturday and after being revealed Sunday, the Golden Knights will have until Wednesday morning to make their selections. Three-time Stanley Cup champion goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Nashville forward James Neal and Anaheim defenseman Sami Vatanen are among the high-profile players available for the Vegas Golden Knights to select in the National Hockey League expansion draft on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.
