Fowler, Thomas let opportunity slip away at US Open

Brooks Koepka produced a back-nine birdie blitz to win the US Open here yesterday, becoming the seventh consecutive first-time victor of a major with a record-equalling four-shot victory at Erin Hills.

American Brooks Koepka fired six birdies in the final round as he powered his way to his first major title in the US Open on Sunday. There would be another first-time major champion at the U.S. Open, and the winning score would be at double digits under par for the third time in U.S. Open history.

Justin Thomas, who shot a 9-under 63 on Saturday-a record in relation to par-to reach Sunday's final pairing while in a second-place tie with Koepka and Fleetwood, struggled in the final round with a 3-over 75 and tied for ninth at 280. There were 133 subpar rounds, nine more than the previous record in that 1990 U.S. Open.

"It gives you a good grounding", Fleetwood said.

Starting the final round with a bunched leaderboard, Koepka and Harman emerged from the pack to trade blows throughout the front nine. I did see that but I don't know if it had come up that (Harman) had bogeyed yet.

The low scoring suggested the 11-year-old course was a cream puff, hardly the USGA's idea of the ultimate test in golf.

Prosecutors rest case in Cosby sex assault trial
Mr Cosby described one instance, in which he admits to sexually touching the plaintiff, as such: "I don't hear her say anything". Cosby was deposed in connection with a lawsuit brought against him by Constand over four days in September 2005 and March 2006.

Well, not exactly. "If I could do it over again, I'd play baseball-100 percent, no doubt", he says.

Matsuyama's 12-under left him one back of Koepka as the latter stood on the 14th tee.

Wise opened 62-62-67 to take a six-stroke lead into the final round. I've been trying to win too badly. I put myself in some good positions in the majors over the last few years and never really quite came through.

"Today is more like a British Open but they were soft conditions", the Big Easy said. 12 and 13 were followed by Koepka birdies on Nos. I thought that the USGA did a phenomenal job this week of allowing the golf course to be what it is and play the way it's supposed to play. Fowler started one shot out of the lead at the Masters this year and shot 76. Koepka played a mean Little League shortstop but somehow wasn't much of a hitter. "I don't think I even mentioned to my caddie, Ricky, even about winning all week", Koepka said.

More startling than the low scores was smoke rising from about a half-mile away when a commercial blimp, not affiliated with the tournament, crashed into a field and burst into flames. But Harman bogeys on Nos. "He went and won the golf tournament on the back nine", Harman said. And I'll win if I stay patient and just keep doing what I'm doing. He putted for birdie to move to 2 under for the day and 2 over for the tournament. Hot enough even to overcome the long shadow of doubt that had begun to haunt him to the point where a year ago he told an interviewer that perhaps he should have stuck with baseball.
