Thomas makes history in US Open third round

On Saturday, Justin Thomas tied the record for the best round at a major by shooting 63.

The American carded an incredible nine-under 63 at Erin Hills, breaking the record for the lowest score to par in the tournament's history. But Saturday's? From more than 300 yards away, Thomas launched it into the sky. In fact, he's not even leading after three rounds. After 54 holes, he is one stroke behind surprise leader Brian Harman.

Tommy Fleetwood (11), Brooks Koepka (11) and Rickie Fowler (10) were also in the double-digit club.

"It's what I believe in myself", Stricker said. "I just knew he was going to make it". Coming into this year I was just like it's another golf tournament.

En route to registering nine birdies, one eagle and two bogeys, the American hit some truly remarkable shots, and the most remarkable of all appears to have been his birdie putt on the fifth hole.

Thomas" caddie is Jimmy Johnson, W.T. White class of "75. Felt like I had a good feel for the speed of the greens today, hit a lot of good lag putts. "And it came out nicely". I think there's a lot of tee shots that are left to right.

"But I'll take exactly where I'm at". "I was excited to shoot 63". "I can't win with the answer to that question".

No. 1, 609 yards, par 5: Driver 312 yards. If that's where the tee is Sunday, it might not be reachable in two, although players will benefit from having a northerly wind to their backs. He got down in three from there. "I just get a little shaky and jittery on putts and that's what happened on 15". And then he made birdie on the next hole. On No. 7, he sank a 15 footer.

However, he was reaching into his pocket to retrieve his identification for the officer, as requested, when shots were fired. Paul held peaceful vigil, carrying signs that condemned the murder of Philando and the acquittal of Yanez.

Thomas had 300 yards to the hole for his second shot at the 18th. 9-iron to 10 feet. Champ, a member of Texas A&M's golf team, has been one of the longest hitters at this US Open, and at -4 he has handled himself more than admirably.

The disappointed 21-year-old declined to be interviewed. He won that tournament by seven shots.

Jordan Spieth's plan Saturday was to post a low early score and count on afternoon weather and course conditions to play havoc on the leaderboard.

The course received almost an inch of rain Friday night and into Saturday morning, so Thomas knew the 18th green was softer Saturday-and much more receptive to a 3-wood. "I was just happy that I was the one that was able to take advantage of it today". Harman, who missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens, is going for his first major title. He two-putted for birdie, and he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th. "Obviously I have no idea what [Sunday] holds, but I'm more motivated by the way I'm striking the ball". I've been putting it pretty good. He made an eagle on his final hole at the Sony Open in January to shoot 59, and he went on to break the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record. This was the goal going into the week to put ourselves in position to be in contention on Sunday. I'm sure I won't sleep in; I usually don't. Harman will have to fend off a bevy of contenders to win his first major.

Reed climbed up the leaderboard with a 65, one day after signing for a 75.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", Fowler said.

"That was the best shot I hit all day".

"I've been there a handful of times and had some good finishes but I'm looking forward to getting the job done".
