Si Woo Kim making move up leaderboard

World number one and defending champion Dustin Johnson is among the late starters and will have to improve on Thursday's three-over effort if he hopes to take his title defence into the weekend.

Si Woo Kim, who captured The Players Championship a month ago, had a 70 and was at 5-under 139 along with a pair of US Open newcomers. With about two hours left in the second round, the cut was looking to be 1-over par, which would tie a U.S. Open record.

Rory McIlroy finished his second round with a string of birdies, however, the world number two also missed the cut.

Johnson shot 1-over 73 on Friday to finish at 4 over, three shots off the cut line.

"We've got an interesting day tomorrow, and then we've got a really, really tough day on Sunday", he said.

Hadwin's game was a little off early in the round but he was able to grind out pars with great putting. "I think the more rounds I can play, I'm hopefully going to get rid of all that stuff and hopefully strip it down to what you saw the last six holes". But I don't let it bother me. I mean, if I can make four birdies around here, you know, that'd be pretty good. "I got out of position but it's the attitude, it's the grit that matters at the end of the week". If I had to render a guess, when the rain comes on over the weekend and takes all roll out of the fairway, officials will make the longest course in major championship history even longer.

Casey said he would not change his approach as he pursues his first major. He'll head home to spend time with his son, River Jones Johnson, who was born Monday. He won't play again until the British Open.

The world's fourth-ranked player birdied six of his first eight holes, shooting six-under 30 going out.

Major champions Bubba Watson, Jimmy Walker, Charl Schwartzel and Jason Dufner also missed. On typical U.S. Open greens, that would have run all the way off the back of the green. He opened Thursday with a 9-over 81.

McIlroy (78) and Day (79) are coming off their worst scores ever in a U.S. Open, mainly because they couldn't keep it out of the thick fescue that frames the wide fairways at Erin Hills. Amateur Stewart Hagestad of Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset shot 75 and missed the cut at 8 over. He thrives on his confidence being up and he gets that from competitive play and performances in competitive situations.

"Just timing was a little bit off, and that was it", McIlroy said.

"There are a lot of really good players out here that haven't won a major".

Next up is a weekend without most of the biggest names in golf.

McIlroy will join Day at the US PGA Tour's Travelers Championship in CT next week."I saw some positives and hopefully I can take them to the Travelers", McIlroy, who has been sidelined a total of 10 weeks with a rib injury in 2017, said.

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", Fowler said.

That's eight of the next 10 weeks after just seven starts in 2017.

"I shot myself in the foot yesterday and gave myself too much to do", he said afterwards.

Deepdale's Hagestad misses cut.
