Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appeared before Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT).

The Joint Investigation Team summoned prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday and recorded his statement for nearly three hours.

While talking to media after his appearance before the JIT at the Federal Judicial Academy in Islamabad on Saturday in Panama Case, Shahbaz Sharif said that he has recorded his statement before the JIT with utmost respect. Going by the fact that the Prime Minister and his party had welcomed judgement of the Supreme Court ordering formation of the JIT to probe allegations against the PM and his family members, one is constrained to ponder as to what went wrong that led to public exposure of grievances against the accountability process.

"First time in the history of country, an elected PM appeared before JIT and the history is rewritten when an elected Chief Minister has turned up today", he said.

According to sources privy to the information, the Punjab CM will face the JIT as a witness.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Shehbaz's son Hamza Shahbaz accompanied him as he arrived at the secretariat.

The JIT alleged that the government was using its official machinery to hamper its investigation.

The JIT team is headed by Federal Investigation Agency Additional Director Wajid Zia, and includes members from Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, State Bank of Pakistan and the National Accountability Bureau.
