US Open: How the Irish have fared on Day 2

He was clearly on the offensive. "Looking forward to the next two days". His round would have been better had it not been for two bogeys in his closing holes.

"We're in a good spot", Fowler said. I think it's easy to lose track, it's very easy to take off on your own path and, before you know it, you're too far down there and it's a long way back.

"I had breakfast but it is a long walk out there and I just wanted to make sure I had enough food in the bag but I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, just love them".

The result of his Friday grind?

The 39-year-old was only able to move his fourth shot a matter of inches in heavy rough over the back of the green on the par five, before hacking out sideways and taking three putts from just off the green. That's not a coincidence. I made a great up-and-down on two and I had two great shots for birdie.

On Thursday, Trevor Thompson, who was the lone pilot of an advertising blimp not affiliated with the U.S. Open, was hospitalized with serious injuries, including burns, after the blimp deflated, crashed and caught fire late in the morning. Not your typical U.S. Open setup, but I'm a big fan. "It's a special weekend".

With the picturesque par-72 course set up at a monstrous 7,845 yards, Erin Hills had been expected to live up to the US Open's billing of being the toughest test in golf. Children chanted at him, and their parents smiled.

"We had a lot of fun out there", said Niebrugge, from Mequon, Wis., and the 2013 Western Amateur champion at The Alotian Club in Roland.

The feeling in Erin, Wisconsin, is undeniable.

Rickie Fowler is ready for a stretch run this weekend.

Transfer Rumors: Ronaldo seeks Real Madrid exit after tax accusations
As a president you can't do anything other than let him go and get the best deal possible. Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly unsettled after what was published earlier this week.

The top-ranked player, defending champion and pre-tournament favorite Dustin Johnson, shot a 75 and said in mild reassurance, "I just didn't putt very well". That doesn't sound all that impressive, right?

And then, Fowler took a bogeys at Nos. Then he recovered by making birdie at five of his next six to get it back under par on the day.

"I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did", Johnson said.

"It was definitely a lot more like a US Open today than yesterday", Leishman said.

Casey has recorded three consecutive top-six finishes in the Masters, but has just one top-10 in the US Open in 13 attempts, which came a decade ago at Oakmont.

Both players liked the course but put their performance down to a lack of execution.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", Casey said.

The last six majors have been won by first-timers, and that cycle has a good chance to continue. He kept it in the short grass, the secret to Erin Hills that wouldn't appear to be that hard with some of the widest fairways for this major. "I have a tee time on Saturday (and) so you just kind of learn along the way to never really give up". Some guys are hitting 4-iron into the greens, and having a wedge and a 9-iron. I've got a nice run leading up to the Open Championship.

Elsewhere, playing partners Fleetwood and Harman again matched each other by following up Thursday's 67 with a two-under 70 to reach the half-way stage atop the leaderboard. I know Koepka can.

Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy provided quite the contrast here on the second day of the 117 US Open. Schauffele is playing in his first major championship and is the No. 352 player in the world.
