A senior White House official confirmed that the president had interviewed Mueller for the FBI post in the Oval Office the day before Rosenstein tapped him to be the special counsel in the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump has expressed frustrations with Sessions, one of the president's earliest high-profile backers.

Mr. Trump, Ruddy said, "was looking at him potentially to become the next Federal Bureau of Investigation director".

"I think the president has been clear last week in the Rose Garden that he believes the sooner we can get this addressed and dealt with, there's been no collusion, he wants to get this investigated as soon as possible and be done with it so he can continue with the business of the American people", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.

Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy, a friend of the president, told the PBS NewsHour that he thinks Trump is "weighing that option".

Rosenstein said he appointed the special counsel, he thinks it was the right thing to do and "I am going to defend the integrity of that investigation".

Mr Ruddy appeared to be basing his remarks, at least in part, on comments from Jay Sekulow, a member of Mr Trump's legal team, who told ABC in an interview on Sunday that he was "not going to speculate" on whether Mr Trump might at some point order deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein to sack Mr Mueller. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Sekulow said. "Special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause and I am required to put that cause in writing".

Donald Trump is considering firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating if Russian Federation colluded in last year's bitter election campaign, a friend of the USA president said on Monday (June 12).

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal Trump adviser, tweeted Monday, "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says that a history of political giving is not a disqualifier for those who work for the Department of Justice's special counsel investigating Russian interference in US elections. Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the investigation and is testifying Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Since his appointment, he has made signals as to the criminal nature of his investigation, hiring Andrew Weissmann, the former head of the DOJ criminal division's fraud section, and former Deputy Solicitor General Michael Dreeben.

CNN's Erin Burnett Monday night said if Trump were to fire Mueller "it would be a bombshell of epic proportions". They are also certainly going to be interested his involvement in the firing of Comey.

Leahy told Rosenstein "you are not the witness who should be behind this table".

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, warned on Twitter that "If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller". Mr Mueller's moves, however, indicate he does not share Mr Trump's view. No date for the meeting has been set, according to a committee aide.
