Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May on Saturday began finalising her cabinet of ministers and held talks with the Democratic Unionist Party to determine the contours of the party's support for her minority government. She later confirmed she had received assurances from the Conservative leadership that there would be no roll-back of LGBT rights as a result of the DUP alliance.

Joining forces with the hardline unionist Protestant party also threatens London's neutrality in Northern Ireland, which is key to the delicate balance of power in a province once plagued by violence.

Downing St. said the Cabinet will discuss the agreement on Monday.

It would mean the DUP backing the Government on its Budget and confidence motions, but could potentially lead to other issues being decided on a vote-by-vote basis.

The announcement came after May lost Downing St. chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, who resigned Saturday.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed a new chief of staff following the resignation of her two top aides. Beleaguered May is appointing new members of her government after several of them lost their seats in Parliament in this week's general election that proved disastrous for her Conservative Party. They quit Saturday after becoming a focus of blame for the Conservatives' election disaster.

The Conservatives won 318 seats in Thursday's vote, down from 331 in 2015, falling short of an overall majority in the 650-seat House of Commons after the opposition Labour Party, led by socialist stalwart Jeremy Corbyn, scored hefty gains. But the election result meant it was unclear whether her plan to take Britain out of the bloc's single market and customs union could still be pursued.

"Gavin will have an important role to play in that".

After her election gamble backfired, May is now so weak and reliant on the support of political rivals inside and outside her Conservative Party that she'll be unable to force through her vision of a clean break with the European Union, according to three senior government officials.

In a resignation statement on the Conservative Home website, Timothy conceded that the campaign had failed to communicate "Theresa's positive plan for the future", and missed signs of surging support for the opposition Labour Party.

While unnamed Conservative MPs briefed various media outlets about their anger over the decision to call the election and over the way the campaign had been run, some were more outspoken in their criticism.

It said the campaign failed to get "Theresa's positive plan for the future across" or "notice the surge in Labour support, because modern campaigning techniques require ever-narrower targeting of specific voters, and we were not talking to the people who chose to vote for Labour".
