Google Now launched in 2012, and Amazon launched Alexa and Echo in 2014, which, in addition to answering Siri-like queries, could do things like turn off the lights in your home. On Monday, Apple announced its own stand-alone product to compete with Amazon's Echo and Google Home: the HomePod, which the company is promoting as a sort of sophisticated music speaker with Siri built in.
Apple wants the HomePod to be hard to classify.
Firstly, Apple isn't ready to dwindle its price.
As far as design goes, the Google Home speaker and the Apple HomePod are two peas in a pod (pun intended).
Look for the HomePod to go on sale in December for $350.
Apple's HomePod is created to work with the Apple Music subscription service and can produce rich sound while tapping into the artificial intelligence power of Siri. Other services like Pandora and Spotify can be played through Apple's AirPlay system, however this still a detriment compared to the direct streaming from virtually every music service offered by the HomePod's competitors.

Unlike its competitors, the HomePod has the ability to tune itself to ensure it plays the best-sounding audio for the room in which it's in.
Given that in recent quarters, Apple has struggled with tepid iPhone sales, it may be hoping that the HomePod will help fuel its revenue growth.
With anonymized IDs, Apple's speakers have a much more compelling argument for not handing over data - they can't find it. When two HomePods are in the same room, they'll identify each other and automatically deliver stereo sound. When tested against Sonos speakers and the Amazon Echo, the sound was superior.
The Apple employees also expressed concern with management's unwillingness to fully open up Siri to third party apps. It will have Siri-integration to enable it to be controlled by voice. Many think Apple's No. 1 product, the iPhone, is to blame.
"With Apple acquiring Bowers & Wilkins talent to develop AirPods, it's clear they are taking audio more seriously".
What remains unknown about HomePod is just how well Siri works within the speaker - it is still yet to be shown off within HomePod. The device costs £129 or $129, a lot less than the HomePod. The Echo can support multiple users as well, but you need to manually switch accounts by name, at least for now - the speaker can't identify people from their voices. Apple claims that the device will "reinvent" listening to home music, however it remains to be seen whether Apple's admittedly late entry will make much of a dent in the burgeoning home Bluetooth speaker industry. Google doesn't have that kind of space: They've got to convince you to buy an Android phone or a Pixel or the Google Home that has Assistant on it. Amazon has to convince you to open the Amazon app on your phone to use Alexa, or buy an Echo device.
