Lewis Hamilton takes Montreal pole with record-breaking lap

Vettel, who had been quickest in final practice, had to settle for second place on the grid after Hamilton flew to his 65th F1 career pole position by over three tenths of a second. So I am honoured to be honoured by that family.

Raikkonen ended a nine-year pole drought in Monaco last time out but failed to replicate those heroics in Montreal, finishing almost 0.9s off Lewis Hamilton's eventual benchmark. It just got better and better, and for the last run I thought we can step it up and we should be able to find a little bit of time, but I lost the vehicle a bit on Turn 2 and then I lost a bit the back. Ferrari have been quick but I was gunning, I was pushing and pushing...it was a sexy lap. The first sector was fantastic and then I managed to be just a little bit up on each one. If they are staying level and we are up and down all the time, for sure it puts a lot of emphasis on us pulling together more than ever and as a team we are closer and more united than we have ever been.

Hamilton spoke of how emulating Senna's pole tally was a target after matching his 41 race wins, and said it was particularly special to do it in his "most difficult" season as Mercedes battle Ferrari for F1 supremacy.

"Montreal's been good to me over the years", said Hamilton. He was the one who inspired me to be where I am today. So to match him and to receive this is the greatest honour.

"I just want to say a big thank you to my family for supporting me all these years and giving me the opportunity to be here today".

While pole position isn't as vital here as it is at some tracks, to take it, or, better still lock-out the front row, would give Ferrari a massive psychological advantage.

"I was not so happy with my job in the last run of Q3", he said. I would have loved to repeat the second run I had and just find a little bit. I lost a bit into Turn Two, and then lost two-tenths out of the second corner and then I knew I had to catch up, which I did until the end of the lap.

The results confounded those who said the opposition Labour Party's left-wing leader, Jeremy Corbyn , was electorally toxic. The Times newspaper's front page declared that Britain was "effectively leaderless" and the country "all but ungovernable".

Overachiever: He may have had a weekend away from his McLaren MCL32 two weeks ago, but Fernando Alonso hasn't forgotten how to get the best from it.

It was a scintillating duel between Hamilton and Vettel, adding another line in what is shaping up as a season long fight. "Lewis had a mega lap". It came during the last runs of Q1 as Pascal Wehrlein pushed beyond the limit on the entry to Turn 1. "Now the race is tomorrow".

Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel was second in 1:11.789 with Valtteri Botta of Mercedes AMG third in 1:12.177 and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen fourth in 1:12.252.

Felipe Massa was seventh for Williams, while Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon were eighth and ninth respectively.

Carlos Sainz took 13th in the other Toro Rosso ahead of Romain Grosjean's Haas and Jolyon Palmer's Renault. The Sauber driver was unhurt, but the incident brought out the yellow flags denying a number of drivers in the drop zone a final attempt.

Another driver to have a disappointing day was Canadian Lance Stroll, who was only 17th in his Mercedes-powered Williams in his home race. Wehrelin wound up 20th and slowest.
