Comey said he had hoped the releasing of the memo would pave the way for the appointment of a special counsel to handle the probe into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, a ploy that ultimately proved successful. Critics of Comey's behavior allege that, in his July 5 press conference regarding the investigation into Clinton's e-mail scandal, he acted in a manner inconsistent with the duties of his office.
But he also faced questions about his fateful decision last summer to make public statements on the results of the FBI's investigation into the Clinton server, which were cited by Trump and Justice officials in the first explanation of Comey's firing. That, he said, was up to Mr Mueller who, among other allegations, was investigating whether Mr Trump personally colluded with the Russians to get to the White House. I would have a queasy feeling too, though, to be candid with you.
Comey said this led him to end-run the Justice Department on the case, as well as a secret meeting on a tarmac at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport between Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Lynch. In the case of Secretary Clinton's emails, Mr. Comey was willing to step beyond his role as an investigator and state his belief about what "no reasonable prosecutor" would conclude about the evidence.
COMEY: "No. That one was done". Lynch has said they were just making small talk.
Feinstein: "Yeah, but this is a separate investigation.and i don't think we should mix the two".
Julie Andrews Won't Appear In Mary Poppins Returns
He added: 'But Emily is the flawless person to carry the torch, and I know Julie feels the exact same way. That said, Andrews is very enthusiastic about the sequel and trusts that the story will "be cared for".
"I'm a little confused, Senator", was Comey's response. This is a very big deal, Brianna. Feinstein said Comey's statements about Lynch were also a matter for the judiciary committee to look at.
"That was the thing that capped it for me that I had to do something separately to protect the credibility of the investigation, which meant both the FBI and the Justice Department", Comey said.
The 80-year-old Arizona Republican joked that maybe he shouldn't have stayed up late watching the Arizona Diamondbacks playing a night game out West.
After the hearing, John McCain blamed his confusing line of questioning on the Arizona Diamondbacks, while John Cornyn of Texas believes that Comey did a disservice by not resigning from his position, based on what was revealed in his testimony.
