Attorney General Sessions next up for Capitol Hill scrutiny

In an odd twist for Congress, senior members of the Senate intelligence committee were unsure if Sessions would even be allowed to appear.

During Comey's public testimony last week, the former FBI director said that he'd engineered the leak to the press of his own accounts of interactions with Trump in order to encourage the DOJ to appoint a special prosecutor to the Russian Federation investigation.

The letter did not say whether Sessions planned to give public testimony on Tuesday or to appear before the panel behind closed doors.

Sessions had been scheduled to testify Tuesday before a joint appropriations subcommittee of Congress, but on Saturday he sent letters to the committee chairmen saying that the intelligence committee would be a better forum to answer questions about Russian Federation.

Sessions stepped aside in March from the federal investigation into contacts between Russia and the presidential campaign of Donald Trump after acknowledging that he had met twice past year with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

President Donald Trump's firing of Comey, whose FBI was investigating Russian meddling, led to an outcry among lawmakers.

During his testimony, Comey said the FBI had learned about something regarding Sessions "that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic". In a closed hearing, Comey said Sessions may have had a third undisclosed meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Leahy took to Twitter on Saturday night and Sunday morning to inform Sessions that he can't run forever. Sessions claims he did tell Comey the Federal Bureau of Investigation and White House needed to follow proper communications protocol. "Totally illegal? Very 'cowardly!'" Trump tweeted on Sunday.

Trump also said he would "100 percent" be willing to testify under oath that he didn't demand a pledge of personal loyalty from Comey.

He also urged Trump to produce any tapes of his conversations with Comey.

"If there aren't tapes, he should let that be known".

Spending the weekend at his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump followed the Comey tweet with a second aimed at Democrats: "The Democrats have no message, not on economics, not on taxes, not on jobs, not on failing #Obamacare".

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on Sunday that Trump was getting in the way of his own agenda.

In a letter, Sessions said some members were going to ask about the investigation into Russian meddling in the presidential election. "And so there is an opportunity to look at the law with respect to obstruction of justice, to hold a hearing, and also to have those relevant people come before the Judiciary Committee", said Feinstein, a member of both committees.
