There Are Now More Female MPs Than Ever In Parliament

"On a dramatic night that shook the political establishment to its core and forced Prime Minister Theresa May to place her Conservative Party into a coalition with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, some 207 female lawmakers were elected to the House of Commons". The final figure of female Members of Parliament had yet to be confirmed Friday morning ― but the tally had reached 201 by 9 a.m. local time.

"Around 10 more women have been elected ― up 5 percent ― but men still outnumber women by more than 2:1 in the corridors of power", said Scott.

Labour also gained two disabled MPs, both of whom are disability rights activists.

The Women's Equality Party ran seven candidates in this year's election but failed to win a single seat.

Among the new names is Labour's Preet Kaur Gill, who picked up a 6,917 majority at Birmingham Edgbaston, also becoming the UK's first female Sikh MP.

The court did, however, see fit to award Isaacs spousal support to "level the playing field" until the trial. On a side note: the court revealed that Blige and Isaacs owe millions of dollars in back taxes as well.

The previous record was set at the last general election in 2015, when 191 female MPs won seats, though the number has since risen to 196 during the last parliament due to a series of by-elections. She is the Green Party's only MP.

But while many celebrated the women's parliamentary achievements, others pointed out that some sections of United Kingdom politics still have a long way to go on gender equality issues.

In 1918, Constance Markievicz became the first woman elected to the House of Commons.

She did not take her seat as she was a member of Sinn Féin.
