Apple sung the praises of Pokemon Go as it talked about changes being made to the company's App Store at today's WWDC event, but it also showed off a new set of APIs that will allow developers to bring even more augmented reality apps to iOS devices. Apple says that makes the Mac a great platform for developing virtual-reality experiences.

Apple just kicked off its annual developer conference with a customary jumbo keynote, where it announced the next major updates for iOS and macOS.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, unveiled the HomePod and took shots at Amazon Echo, Google Home and other competitors.

Soon after the announcement, Amazon tweeted, "You asked (a lot)".

The objective of WWDC is to update developers on what direction all of Apple's software is going.

The iPhone screen will also be locked to prevent drivers from using many of their apps while driving.

Other new watchfaces include a kaleidoscope and new characters such as Woody, Jesse, and Buzz from the Toy Story movie franchise.

The Photos app is adding new filters, and Apple says it has improved the face detection feature. Samsung and Google already have VR systems centered on their smartphones. If a user erases a message on your iPhone or iPad, that will be reflected on the Mac as well. Tapping Apple's Siri digital assistant, such a speaker is expected to serve as a butler as well as an outlet for listening to music.
