The Amazon Echo and Google Home are under $200, but Apple folks argue that the higher price tag is worth it. But Apple was careful to frame it as a product focused on music first - potentially differentiating it from the Echo and Home.
A deal bringing Amazon Prime Video to Apple TV, announced on Monday at Apple Inc's developer conference after years of talk, shows how competitive tensions among Silicon Valley titans can stand in the way of serving customers. While many experts believe that Amazon's product is now stronger than Apple's (especially its activation command) and more competitively priced, it may not take long for Apple to add features and improve its Home Pod.
Apple is pitching the HomePod as a music player above everything else, perhaps because Siri is perceived to be far weaker than Google's Assistant and Amazon's Echo intelligent assistants.
With HomePod, Apple is also offering some robust personal security features, which should work to its advantage, both Husson and Ask suggest.
According to Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, the HomePod will "reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes".
Displaying a Sonos product to show speakers that were, in Cook's words, "speakers but not smart", and an Amazon Echo to show something that was "smart, but not a speaker", HomePod is meant to be both.
Google merely lists a "high excursion speaker" in its Home gadget.
Cavaliers' Tyronn Lue sticking with JR Smith
Smith has scored only three points in two games - opening the Finals scoring with a three-pointer - while averaging 21.1 minutes. The former Knick's confidence remains high and his bravado hasn't waned despite his disappearing act in Games 1 and 2.
His rather broad launch window was echoed by Amazon itself. Google already tries to be proactive with its Assistant on Android phones and Google Home speaker. The research firm eMarketer says than 35 million people in the US are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than double its estimate from last year.
Either way, the HomePod has been announced and arrives later this year. So it has to prove that it can make a good speaker before calling it the best speaker ever. This is about a digital assistant. After that point, it gives your request an anonymous ID and encrypts it before sending it to Apple to get a response.
Since HomePod will not hit the market until December, it is unlikely to catch much of the year-end holiday shopping wave and post big sales this year, according to Blau. "To the extent that this allows Apple to participate more fully in payment economics, this could foreshadow a large additional earnings opportunity for the company". The new model starts at $649 and will start shipping next week.
A new version of Apple's iPad operating system, iOS 11, is the announcement which will have had the most effort ploughed into its development.
"Augmented reality. This is going to be the new operating system and that was the big news at WWDC", Gene Munster, Apple analyst and Loup Ventures, founder told FOX Business' Stuart Varney.
Apple also shared the latest version of watchOS4, which continues to put the emphasis on the Apple Watch as a fitness device. Cook is aiming to double services revenue, which also includes products like iCloud and Apple Music, to around $50 billion by 2020.
Along the same lines, the iPad's multitasking capabilities are also getting a major upgrade, thanks to the new App Switcher feature.
