Indian police briefly detain Rahul Gandhi

Prior to his arrest, Gandhi took to Twitter saying, "Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh government are doing their best to prevent me from entering MP and meeting the families of the farmers killed in Mandsaur".

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today accused the Congress of instigating and politicising farmers' stir in Madhya Pradesh and termed Rahul Gandhi's planned visit to the violence-hit Mandsaur as "another photo opportunity". He told reporters that Modi could waive loans worth Rs 1.50 lakh crore of the rich but not for farmers. Taking a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government, Gandhi said, "Modi can not grant farmers a loan waiver or fair rates".

Violent protests have spread across the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, after police admitted to opening fire on crowds of protestors Tuesday killing five.

"The 46-year-old Nehru-Gandhi scion has been taken into preventive custody even before he could enter Mandsaur from the neighboring western state of Rajastan to meet the families of the five dead farmers as curfew is imposed in the area".

"(Rahul) Gandhi reached Udaipur from Delhi in a chartered plane and left for Madhya Pradesh in a four wheeler by road.

The leader said that on June 10, AAP district leaders will meet districts officials with the problems of farmers of each district. "They can give only bullets". "No such incident has been reported today".

India's agricultural sector grew by an average of 3% between 2008-2014, while India's economy overall grew at a rate of 7%, according to India's Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare. All three places witnessed violence by farmers. Mr. Gandhi met the relatives of deceased at a village situated at Rajasthan border later in the evening. He said Pipliamandi Town Inspector Anil Singh Thakur, who had allegedly fired at the farmers causing casualties, had been removed from field duty and sent to the Mandsaur police lines. Earlier in the day, the police had maintained that they would not permit Gandhi to visit the district.

"Prime Minister Modi speaks of development (utthan), but has instead only tweeted about "Uttana-Mandukasana" (yoga posture) in last 24 hours", Singhvi said. "The state government is always ready for talks with farmers".

Following the Uttar Pradesh's announcement of the waiver, some other state governments and farmers organizations have been demanding Modi to bailout loans through out the country.

Keeping a key election promise, the newly-formed state government in Uttar Pradesh chose to waive farm loans worth 363.59 billion rupees ($5.6 billion) for over 21.5 million farmers at its first cabinet meeting in April.
