The Cupertino, California-based company said Siri, which also competes with Alphabet Inc's Google Assistant, will now work across devices.

Apple CEO Tim Cook introduces the Homepod. Apple said HomePod stands 7 inches tall and will available for $349 in December. Moreover, Siri will respond to requests for information and other help around the house.

The two speakers also have other functionalities aside from playing music.

Apple-designed upward-facing woofer, paired with the custom A8 chip, enables bass management through real-time software modeling that ensures the speaker delivers the deepest and cleanest bass possible, with low distortion.

And if you're a tablet kind of person, besides seemingly being in an exclusive company these days, Apple is trying to hold your attention or wallet with the new iPad Pro. The HomePod, which has been pegged as Apple's answer to Amazon Echo and Google Home, will begin shipping to customers this December. Shipments of intelligent home speakers surged almost 600 per cent year-over-year to 4.2 million units in the fourth quarter, with Amazon taking about 88 per cent share and Google 10 percent, according to consultant Strategy Analytics. The latter is a very important feature since one of the major components of every smart speaker is an AI personal assistant. Rather than exclusively competing with products like the Amazon Echo and Google Home, Apple is positioning HomePod as a hybrid product that does more.

NPR's David Folkenflik reached out to Fox News , who told him that Catherine Herridge was the lead reporter on the story. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly agreed.

Cook didn't reveal a specific date that Amazon would hit Apple devices other than just "later this year".

Apple marketing boss Phil Schiller said Apple wanted to combine good speakers with smart speakers you can talk to, referencing Sonos and Amazon Alexa. It unveiled the Apple Watch in September 2014. But while consumers likely will view the device as the latest addition to a market now dominated by Amazon and Google, Apple has bigger plans for its new product. It is also compatible with Apple's HomeKit, allowing users to control connected home devices with speech.

Apple's entry into the market could change this.

Mac models were also boosted to work with virtual reality gear, a move by Apple into technology that Facebook has embraced with its Oculus unit.
