The quake hit at a depth of nine kilometres (six miles) at 10:35 pm, west of the town of Poso, according to the United States Geological Survey.
A strong, shallow natural disaster rocked Indonesia's central Sulawesi province Monday evening, injuring at least three people and damaging some buildings and houses, but producing no tsunami warning. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties, and no tsunami warning. It added that a number of houses and churches were damaged in nearby villages, where at least three people were hospitalized for head wounds.
Sutopo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, said in a statement the powerful quake lasted around 20 seconds and caused panic as people rushed out of their houses, with many staying outside because of an aftershock.
BKMG later downgraded the quake to magnitude 5.

It said the land-based quake didn't have any potential to cause a tsunami.
