Trump on Tuesday fired FBI Director James Comey.
Donald Trump launched a stinging attack on his critics last night at the end of the most turbulent week of his presidency.
Mr Trump's threat about tapes has intensified calls from Democrats for an independent probe of alleged Russian meddling in the USA election.
Trump's spokespeople, including Vice Pres. Mike Pence all dutifully repeated their talking points for days after Comey was sacked, only to have the president embarrass them in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt in which Trump took full credit for the firing and openly admitted that it was about the Russian Federation investigation.
As leaks from White House staffers have expanded in the wake of the ouster, the unnamed Trump administration source affirmed that "the White House's explanation changed dramatically over a 48-hour period".
"The FBI is one of our Nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement", President Trump said in a statement.
The former director was described by those close to him as doing fine after the jarring week.
Schiff added that the next FBI director to lead the investigation will need to have "absolute integrity and independence" noting it should be someone "non-political". "And that's what we want for the FBI", Trump said.
