Farina said the agents, who were ultimately turned away from the school because they didn't have a warrant, were not with US Immigrant and Customs Enforcement.
This was the first time immigration officers visited a school since Mayor Bill de Blasio issued guidelines making it clear that enforcement agents were not wanted.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman Anita Rios Moore said the agents visited the school to inquire information on the student's enrollment but did not ask to see the student.
"Although school visits are not routine in these circumstances, they are not unprecedented", spokeswoman Anita Rios Moore said.
It said the visitors were fraud officers investigating a request for immigration benefits, adding that the officers never sought to question the student, and that they sought only to determine if he was enrolled.
However, they did not ask to speak with the student, who is not the subject of the query, Tichacek said.
It's still unclear as to why exactly the agent was trying to locate the student. But thanks to a citywide policy that allows schools to deny officers entry without a warrant, school officials turned the agent away.
