McConnell also says he recommended to Trump that he nominate Merrick Garland to replace fired FBI Director James Comey.

Garland's name began to surface as a possible replacement last week when GOP Sen. The source would not comment on whether Garland had been approached about becoming Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Garland, 64, has been praised by both Democrats and Republicans in his 20 years on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often called the second highest court in the country.

McConnell lead the charge previous year to prevent Garland, who was President Barack Obama's pick to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant after the death of Antonin Scalia, from being confirmed in the Senate to the high court. The high court vacancy was filled last month by Neil Gorsuch. Senate Republicans insisted at the time that the next president should replace Scalia.
