Cosmos DB is designed for "planet-scale" applications, giving developers fine control over the replication policies and reliability.
A major part of this will be involve using more data collected and collated from businesses and users, with their permission, in Microsoft Graph, an data tool and application programming interface (API) that allows native and third-party applications to make queries against data across integrated Office 365 applications, cloud services. and devices. And while price comparisons between Azure Database for MySQL/Postgres and Azure SQL DB may be made hard by their different premises, Kumar was very confident that Azure's MySQL/Postgres offerings will be price-competitive with those same databases on RDS. Graphs are useful for analyzing large datasets and make predictions based on similarity of connections. This also means that you can now use VI right from the Azure Portal for example.
By contrast, NoSQL (a.k.a. not only SQL) databases handle messy, unstructured data-the sort generated by sensors or other devices in the field.
Microsoft also took the unusual step of announcing guarantees on Cosmos DB performance in the form of what the industry calls a Service Level Agreement.
Rimma Nehme, a database architect working on Cosmos DB, said: "We give you SLAs in four dimensions, latency, throughput, availability and consistency".
Data is stored as JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) objects, rather than binary objects, which are in Azure blob storage.
Trump's tax plan could cost an estimated $5.5 trillion
Said Kahn: "The bottom line is we need to wait and see what the real details are and how they'll negotiate to get something". For individuals and families, Trump's plan more closely resembles a blueprint released by House Republicans a year ago .
Cosmos DB supports scaling to two or more Azure regions.
Amazon RDS also supports a service Amazon calls Aurora, which is a MySQL- and Postgres-compatible database of Amazon's own fashioning. Microsoft states that it uses Cosmos DB internally for Cosmos DB for its own projects including Windows Store and Xbox Live. Other use cases include mobile applications, games and web applications.
Azure SQL, the hosted SQL Server offering, now supports managed instances, with instance-level compatibility for easier migration from on-premises solutions.
The rest of Build's Day One keynote focused on new developer tools and services, in particular Azure cloud services that developers could tap to create scalable, AI-powered intelligent apps and services. Microsoft's new database migration services (in preview) move Oracle and SQL Server databases into Azure SQL Database with near-zero application downtime, and at no extra cost or configuration. Microsoft certainly does not want them to defect to Amazon Web Services or Google (goog), both of which are making a run at business customers. Microsoft's announcements are not enough to put the company ahead in this area but will help to close the gap.
