Paul Ryan's visit to Harlem charter school sparks protest

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, protesters had a message for the House Speaker; "You are not welcome in Harlem".

There's another layer to Ryan's visit.

Some protesters were lined up outside the school as the vehicle carrying Ryan pulled up and the speaker quickly walked out and into the school amid shouts of "Shame!"

Though faculty and students at the charter school greeted Ivanka Trump warmly, those at P.S. 149 Sojourner Truth school, the public school with which Success Academy shares a campus, did not hide their displeasure over the first daughter's visit. The visit to the Success Academy came just days after the House approved a repeal of Obamacare. Mindy Rosier, a special education teacher at the public school, told HuffPost that it was a high-functioning autism class that "wouldn't have given him too many problems".

"The class they went into is an extremely friendly class", Rosier said when asked to describe how students reacted to Ryan.

Another protester said she was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation at age 22 anxious she would not get the coverage she needs under the proposed health care plan, which would allow health insurance companies to restore pre-existing conditions as a basis for more expensive or rejected care.

The school is part of a network of 34 schools run by former New York City Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz. She's also been an avid supporter of current Secretary of Education Betsey DeVos and often defends Trump's positions, which are widely unpopular among her teaching staff.

A source familiar with the visit said Ryan stopped into a public school classroom, co-located in the same building, before heading on a tour of Success.

Ryan, in a statement issued after his visit, described the tour as "special". Success Academies across the city have been criticized for discriminating against black and brown students, and in 2016, one chapter in Fort Greene was hit with a civil rights suit for forcing out students who had (or were believed to have had) disabilities. "That's what matters-giving every kid a fair shot at the American Dream".

"I know that Paul Ryan obviously really doesn't care about the children in this building", James said.
