BALCH SPRINGS, Texas - Police in this Dallas suburb said Tuesday night that they fired officer Roy Oliver for a violation of department policy after he shot and killed Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old boy riding in the passenger seat of a vehicle that was driving away from a house party.

A family statement released Tuesday night called for disciplinary action against other officers who "extended this nightmare for those children".

It was in a press conference Monday that Balch Springs police chief Jonathan Haber revealed that after watching the video footage of the incident, he was "unintentionally incorrect".

"I take responsibility for that", Haber said, according to CNN.

The family is hoping Oliver is charged with murder, Merritt said, even though they know the Dallas County Sheriff's Office investigation could take months.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when police responded to reports of underage drinking at a house party where around 100 kids had gathered, neighbours said.

Before he could respond, the officer, identified as Oliver, fired three shots into the vehicle, striking Edwards' in the head.

The termination of Oliver comes on the heels of authorities changing their story after initially stating that the vehicle police fired upon was moving in "an aggressive manner". But lawyers for 15-year-old Jordan Edwards' family said Wednesday that the city must answer for more than Oliver, including a racial slur allegedly yelled at one of Edwards' brothers moments after the shooting.

Shots from his rifle pierced the front side passenger window, hitting Edwards in the front seat, according to Edwards' family attorneys, Lee Merritt and Jasmine Crockett.

The Dallas County district attorney and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department are continuing to investigate the case.

The investigation into the officer involved shooting where a 15-year-old Mesquite High School student was killed by a Balch Springs Police officer is ongoing.

Balch Springs is a working-class suburb of 25,000 people east of Dallas.

"After Jordan's two brothers, Vidal and Kevon, along with their two friends, were forced to experience this tragedy up close as occupants of the auto, they were immediately treated as common criminals by other officers; manhandled, intimidated and arrested, while their brother lay dying in the front seat", the family said. Authorities are investigating what led Oliver, who was sacked, to shoot Edwards as he was sitting in the passenger seat of a moving auto.

Late on Tuesday evening, the family of Jordan Edwards released a statement praising the firing of the officer who fatally shot their son but noting the long road to justice for Edwards that lies ahead.

"We are here to serve this community and we're going to continue to do our jobs and we're going to continue to do it to the best of our ability", Haber said. "In fact, according to the video that I viewed the vehicle was moving forward as the officer was approached", Haber said.

The family also said they don't condone threats or violence against the Balch Springs police.
