Dennis Hastert will lose state lawmaker pension, retirement board decides
Trustees of an Illinois state retirement board on Wednesday terminated the pension that imprisoned former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert received for his almost six years of service in the Illinois General Assembly.
"We will continue to have some flexibility in classroom size", he said.
The superintendent of the state's Department of Public Instruction will be required to conduct periodic audits. But if you ask any middle school or high school teacher about class sizes, they will tell you how hard it already is to teach a class with almost 40 students, to manage behaviors, to communicate regularly with parents and provide individualized instruction with timely and detailed feedback for every student. Those changes would likely have meant reductions in arts and physical education - despite the fact that these classes are a critical part of providing students with a well-rounded learning experience.
The N.C. Senate passed a compromise Tuesday to extend the deadline for schools to meet new class size requirements until fall 2018 - a year later than House Bill 13 had proposed.
