Perdue was sworn in by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, who also is a native of Georgia.

President Donald Trump's proposed budget would slash spending on agriculture research and other rural development. "His deep, personal experience in agriculture will be a great asset as he works to maintain the safety net for U.S. Producers, open markets for U.S. agricultural products and rebuild rural infrastructure".

"We also commend Secretary Perdue on his support - reiterated during his Senate Agriculture Committee hearing - for relieving the obstacles dairy producers deal with when looking to hire workers for year-round labor. We look forward to continuing our long standing partnership with USDA and working with incoming officials to identify burdensome regulations and other barriers that make it hard for independent grocers to grow their businesses and ultimately create jobs in the communities they serve".

Nebraska 3rd District Congressman Adrian Smith of Gering, founder and co-chairman of the Modern Agriculture Caucus, praises the confirmation.calling it "great news for Nebraska agriculture" because Perdue is "well-positioned to lead the USDA in helping create more opportunity for US producers".

A statement on USDA's website provides more information on Secretary Sonny Perdue.

In addition, United Fresh Board member, Bill Brim of Lewis Taylor Farms of Tipton, Georgia stated, "I've known and worked with Sonny Perdue for many years and I know what a dedicated public servant he is".

"Governor Perdue's confirmation comes at a critical time as negotiations for the 2018 farm bill reauthorization are underway and as the White House drafts a new trade agenda", Schemm said.

Perdue's late nomination back in January-in addition to the 3-month confirmation wait-has prompted some to say that all matters concerning rural farming and food safety in the US are not a priority for President Trump.

" 'I know he will put the needs of farmers, ranchers and others in rural America first, ' Roberts said".

The Associated Press reported that Perdue, son of a farmer from Bonaire, Georgia, will be the first Southerner in the post in more than two decades. It's clear that Secretary Perdue is going to be a key part of the President's trade team. Robert Lighthizer, Trump's nominee for USA trade representative, and Alexander Acosta, nominated to head the Labor Department, still await confirmation, Market Watch reports.
