Witnesses told police that the suspect left the scene.
Police say 25-year-old Justin Lampkins of Bloomington was found wounded on the ground near the drive-thru lane and died at a Bedford hospital.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Bedford Police Department.
DeWees said Schaffer walked away from the victim, then returned with a gun and shot Lampkins in the chest. "It's a tragedy for the victim's family, and even the accused's family I'm sure, but mostly for the victim's family".

The suspect, Evan Schaffer of Orleans, was taken into custody and transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where he's being held without bond on a murder charge. His family says his grandfather, an Army veteran, inspired him to join the military. "His whole life was riddled with stories of defending people when they needed it". He was not an angry or disrespectful person.
A former Triton High School graduate has been charged with murder in Bedford, Indiana. He achieved the rank of sergeant by the time he was discharged in late 2015.
