The new cable-stayed bridge, which connects Greenpoint Brooklyn to Maspeth Queens opens tomorrow with a light show.
The lighting system is part of Cuomo's "New York Harbor of Lights" initiative that will include all seven MTA-operated bridges and tunnels and the Port Authority's George Washington Bridge.
Governor Andrew Cuomo will hold a grand opening event at noon, followed by a bigger celebration with a light show at 7 p.m. The second phase of the bridge will be ready in 2020, but the old bridge has to be imploded first.
Once the new span is open, six lanes will take traffic from Brooklyn to Queens and vice versa. In preparation for the traffic switch, motorists should expect lane closures in both directions on the BQE for the movement of concrete barriers to allow for traffic to be safely shifted onto the new bridge.

Drivers we spoke with say the ongoing construction has been a pain, but they're looking forward to using the new bridge. But now the traffic is horrendous. "I know people complain, but it was ok".
Cuomo announced in February that the old Kosciuzsko, opened in 1939, would go out with a bang, with workers carting away the span's center portion and then rigging the remaining structure with explosives in order to speed up work.
The new bridge is the first to be built in the city since the Verrazano in 1964.
