The deployment of a U.S. Navy strike group - which will be joined by two Japanese destroyers and South Korean ships - to the Korean Peninsula is a show of force and a clear warning to North Korea.

North Korea condemned Trump for planning the briefing, along with the State Department's move to hold a meeting of UN Security Council foreign ministers on Friday.

A White House readout of the call said Trump criticized North Korea's "continued belligerence" and the leaders "reaffirmed the urgency of the threat".

Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun stated in an editorial Tuesday its army has the capacity to "respond to any war the United States wants", and that the "era of the US imperialist's nuclear terror has ended forever", because North Korea has developed its own nuclear capacity.

Mr Trump criticised Pyongyang's belligerence, the White House said.

Nikki Haley, Trump's United Nations ambassador, said Monday the USA wasn't looking for a fight with Kim and wouldn't attack North Korea "unless he gives us reason to do something".

A statement from U.S. Naval Forces Korea called the sub's visit "routine" and said it was a chance to highlight the alliance between the U.S. and South Korean navies.
