China's desire to keep United States forces off its border was a key reason for its intervention in the Korean War, which ended in the current stalemate more than six decades ago.

China's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that it was seriously concerned by recent comments made by North Korean officials warning of further missile tests and the possibility of nuclear war.

President Donald Trump has already dispatched the USS Carl Vinson, powered by nuclear reactors, carrying nearly 100 aircraft and accompanied by destroyers, a cruiser, and a submarine to the region, reported the Daily Mail of UK. It also came as China has taken economic retaliation against Seoul over the deployment of the USA -led Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) missile shield, straining relations between the two Northeast Asian neighbors.

China's foreign minister recently likened the USA and North Korea to two speeding trains hurtling toward each other, an analogy that would seem to place China in the role of helpless bystander.

Earlier this year, China called on the USA and North Korea to give up something to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

While THAAD appears to be a done deal, China is playing a long game of reminding South Korea that, as a smaller and weaker nation, it needs to subordinate its security interests to those of China, said Cheng. On Sunday, North Korea launched another missile test which turned out to be unsuccessful. He also added that an "all-out war" would result if the US took military action against the country.

Despite this, Han Song-ryol, North Korea's deputy foreign minister, told the BBC that the North would continue its missile tests, "on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis", warning that if the United States took military action against them, an "all-out war" would ensue. The United States' commanding general there is calling for thousands more USA troops. "I think that the relationship that the president started building with President Xi down in Mar-a-Lago is clearly showing some positive signs".
