Varsities, colleges closed in Kashmir Valley

Educational institutions remained closed on Tuesday in the Kashmir Valley in view of the widespread student protests on Monday.

Students of numerous colleges in the Valley on Monday held protests demonstrations against alleged highhandedness of security forces against students of Degree College, Pulwama, on Saturday.

Sources said that students from various schools and colleges in the area descended on the highway and marched towards Banihal town where they blocked the highway.

The students alleged that the troopers who were travelling from Kashmir to Jammu manhandled and thrashed few students.

"After the students protested against the CRPF action, policemen resorted to baton charge", said a student. Some of the critically injured students have been identified as Iqra, Basit Khurshid and Umar Majid Srinagar.

The protesting students pelted stones on forces who fired tear smoke shells.

The students of Higher Secondary school Nadihal of same district also staged a demonstration against the use of force on the students of GDC Pulwama, reports said. The Kashmir University also postponed its exams, which were scheduled today.

In Occupied Kashmir, life remained paralyzed in Pulwama, Kulgam, Kupwara and other areas, on Tuesday, due to shutdown against the Indian forces' brutal actions on protesting students in the territory. "Fresh dates for the deferred examinations shall be notified separately, later", a KU spokesman said in a statement.
