Facebook slaying suspect Steve Stephens dead

Acting on a tip from the McDonald's, state troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his vehicle to try to get it to stop, authorities said. The Pennsylvania police tweeted: "After a brief pursuit, he shot and killed himself".

"We would have preferred it not ended this way", Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said. "We would like to have brought Steve in peacefully, and really talked to him and find out exactly why this happened".

Meanwhile, the manhunt that started in Cleveland's east side expanded rapidly into a nationwide search for Stephens, a 37-year-old job counselor who worked with teens and young adults, police said. It was just the latest instance of crime footage being shared on social media.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg pledged on Tuesday that his company would do all it could to prevent postings of incidents like Sunday's fatal shooting in Cleveland, which was visible on the social media site for two hours. He said he "just snapped".

A source close to Facebook says it has "thousands" of people reviewing content around the world. The victim did not seem to recognize the woman's name.

"Steve Stephens was spotted this morning by [Pennsylvania State Police] members in Erie County", the state police said on its Twitter account.

Cleveland police issued an aggravated murder warrant for Stephens.
